Overview

3-oxoacyl-[acyl-carrier-protein] synthase 3 (KAS III, FabH) is an enzyme that catalyzes the initial condensation step in the type II fatty acid synthesis (FAS II) pathway in bacteria and plant plastids. It uses acetyl-CoA and malonyl-ACP to form acetoacetyl-ACP, initiating fatty acid biosynthesis. As it is essential for bacterial cell membrane formation but absent in mammals, it represents a promising target for novel antibiotics.
